Puppy Socialisation

Socialisation is critical to ensure your puppy grows up into a relaxed, well balanced dog.

In domestic dogs the socialisation window begins to close between three and five months of age depending on breed and individual makeup. Dogs above this age range can still of course be socialised however their habituation to novel stimulus is slightly slower, and as the dog progresses in age this becomes even slower. This is not to say older dogs cannot be socialised to novel objects, it just takes more time and effort on behalf of the owner.

Effective positive socialisation of a puppy produces a dog who is at a reduced risk for fearfulness and biting, but also one is under much less chronic stress as an adult.

We are offering the opportunity for puppies 18 weeks and under to join us in our puppy play group. We will introduce novel objects to the dogs including a variety of different people, livestock, unfamiliar sights and obviously other dogs.

These group is very informal, there is no emphasis on training (see Training Classes for details of training) only introducing the puppies to new positive experiences and having fun.

The puppies are all allowed to play freely together in a secure 20×40 metre arena. We offer the opportunity for your puppy to be handled by other owners to reduce fearfullness of strangers and also for you to play with the other puppies aswell.

Children are welcome to come along, however parents are responsible for their children at all times and it it your decision and responsibility to let the children be present with all the puppies playing loose in the arena.

We practice getting the puppies used to being groomed, handled for the vet and groomer, cleaned up, how to take treats gently to name just a few things!

On completion of 4 play group sessions or more owners receive a certificate for making a considerable effort to socialise their puppy!
